Mercy Mounthawk Gaa hurlers made history yesterday as they were the first Kerry team to win the Munster Post Primary Schools U15 E Hurling Final & it was the first Munster Final to be played at the new Kerry GAA Centre of Excellence in Currans.

The team was backboned with a strong St. Brendan’s contingent & trained by our own Tadhg O Sullivan. Congratulations to all involved.
The St. Brendan’s players were: Odhran Pierce, Darragh O Sullivan, Gavin Raggett, Lorcan Ryan, Sean Brosnan, Fiachra O Connor, Earnan Ferris, Christopher Nolan.
Subs on the panel: Fionán Egan & Donal O Sullivan, Adam Doyle.
Mercy Mounthawk defeated Mt. Sion, Colaiste Cluain Meala & Comeragh Collge on their way to the final where they defeated another Kerry team from Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine, Kenmare 4-12 to 3-11. This was a very significant victory for a Kerry post primary school & we congratulate all involved.

Best of luck to former #GAA President Seán Walsh in his new appointment & to Abbeydorney resident Tom Hannafin who is the Cultural Officer of Kerry Ladies Gaelic Football.

4/5/18

Local media have got the news that two of our senior hurlers have retired from the Kerry GAA hurling panel. We can confirm that Darren Dineen & Rory Horgan after years of travelling up & down the country with the Kerry hurlers have finally called time on their Inter county career. Both have given sterling service in the cause of Kerry hurling & have seen the good days as well as the bad days. They will both continue with their Club hurling & while their loss will be seriously missed at county level we hope the Club will reap the benefits of their talents. We wish them well.

3/5/18

We would also like to congratulate our players Nathan O Driscoll & Cian McDonagh who played their part in last night’s #BOICelticChallenge U17 hurling win with Kerry GAA. Colm Healy is also on the panel but was unavoidably absent.

The Bank of Ireland Celtic Challenge is the national hurling development competition for 16 and 17-year old hurlers who are not sitting Leaving Certificate examinations this summer.

HURLING WORKSHOP:

On Saturday 12th May Kerry GAA are running a hurling workshop aimed at coaches from u6 to Minor.
The workshop will be facilitated by former Kerry Captain John ‘Tweek’ Griffin. Double All-Ireland Club Championship winner Darragh O’Connell & former Limerick hurler Gavan O’Mahoney.

The workshop will be on in the ITTralee Astro pitch from 11am to 12:30pm. I would advise all clubs to send a coach from each age group as this is a great opportunity to learn some new fresh ideas that can be adapted and used for all age groups.

Please arrive on time as the workshop will start at 11am sharp. I will look forward to seeing your club coaches there. Many thanks.

Kind regards,
Giles O’Grady.

Kerry GAA Kerry Coaching & Games are running a one day Foundation Level Coaching Course.

This course is aimed at Coaches involved with teams from Under 6 to 12 and the content of the course will focus on the developing players at this age group.

This will be hugely beneficial for coaches involved with teams at these age groups and all clubs are asked to send in as many coaches as possible.
The Foundation Award is the introductory award for coaches of Gaelic Games. The course is aimed at beginner coaches and will enable participants to assist a coach in the organisation of activities to develop football and hurling.

The course is seven and a half hours in duration and covers four key modules, as well as introductory and conclusion modules.
These four modules are:
• Introduction to Games
• Skill Development
• Movement Skills
• Coaching Children, Youths and Adults
Coaching Competencies to be developed

By the end of this course participants will be able to:
• Assist a coach in organising a programme of games and skill development activities appropriate to each participant’s needs and abilities
• Identify the skills of football and hurling.
• Assist a coach in organising progressive activities (drills and fun games) to develop key skills
• Assist a coach in organising progressive activities to develop movement skills appropriate to Gaelic Games
• Assist a coach in organising and managing players for an effective practice session
• Build Rapport, Observe, Analyse, Explain, Provide Demonstration and Provide Positive Feedback to Players
Course Philosophy

The GAA is committed to implementing an integrated Coach Education Programme with a view to maximising participation, optimising playing standards and ensuring that player’s needs are catered for in a balanced way.

The course is designed to promote the development of the How to Coach skills through modelling of best practice, as demonstrated by the tutor, experimential learning and through the guided reflection on previous experiences – as a coach, player, official or parent – facilitated by the tutor

The course will take place on Saturday March 3rd 2018 in St Michael’s College Listowel starting 10am. The tutors for the course will be Giles O’Grady & Daniel O’ Donoghue.

TUBRID 1917: This year marked the 100th Anniversary of Tubrid’s Co. Senior Hurling Championship win. As a tribute to the hurlers of that era St. Brendan’s Hurling Club with the kindness of the Sinnott family, Tubrid erected a plaque in their memory. Despite the rain & cold a crowd gathered at 11am on St. Stephen’s morning at Tubrid Cross for the unveiling. Among the crowd gathered was Margaret Flaherty, (nee McElligott) from Banna & she was invited to unveil the plaque. Margaret’s uncle John McElligott was a member of the 1917 team. Club Chairman Gerard Hussey & Vice Chairman Justin Horgan gave a short overview of the Tubrid mens contribution to hurling in the parish & Tom Kelly paid his own tribute on behalf of all the Tubrid people present at the unveiling. The plaque reads “Cumann Iomana Breandan Naofa, Unveiled to commemorate the Centenary of Tubrid winning the 1917 Co. Senior Hurling Championship. Nollaig 2017″. Special thanks to the organising committee of Gerard Hussey, Justin Horgan, Tommy O Connor, Josephine O Riordan & Jeremiah Clifford & a very sincere thanks to Pa Joe Clifford who made sure the plaque was secured in place. There are still some of the tribute booklets available from Josephine O Riordan, Justin Horgan, Ardfert Print & Polymath Books, Tralee. Cost €5.

26/12/17

The rain did not deter the crowd from attending the unveiling of the plaque this morning at Tubrid Cross, Ardfert.
The lovely plaque on a site kindly offered by the Sinnott family was unveiled by Margaret O Flaherty Banna, (nee McElligott) whose uncle John McElligott was a member of the 1917 Tubrid team.

1967 / 1917 TRIBUTE NIGHT: Last Saturday night was an emotional & nostalgic one for the members & relatives of the 1967 Co. Championship Ardfert hurling team. They were honoured at a function at Kate Browne’s restaurant organised by St. Brendan’s Hurling Club in acknowledgement of the 50th anniversary of the 1967 win & memories were rekindled & friendships renewed during the evening. The Chairman of Kerry Co. Committee Tim Murphy & the Chairman of the North Kerry Hurling Board Pat Dineen who were attending the North Kerry Hurling Board Annual Awards made sure to call & pay their own tributes to the team. Gerard Hussey the current St. Brendan’s Chairman welcomed all the guests & recalled some of their hurling feats. A glossy souvenir booklet was compiled & produced by Tommy O Connor & is sure to become a collector’s item. The booklet is a superb production & contains some previously unseen photographs & newspaper cuttings etc. Tommy also gave a very comprehensive overview of the 1967 Championship campaign. Phil Healy spoke on behalf of the team & had some lovely words of tribute to his former team mates & words of encouragement for the current St. Brendan’s hurlers. The 1967 team: Billy O Connell, John O Sullivan (Captain), Timmy O Sullivan, Thomas Healy, Jim Healy, John Lawlor RIP, James McGrath, Brendan Finnerty RIP, Willie Maguire RIP, Tommy McGrath, Patrick O Sullivan RIP, Sol Houlihan RIP, Pat Joe Dowling, Denis Horgan RIP, Billy McCarthy, Phil Healy, Timmy Mc Elligott RIP, Jimmy Collins, P J O Riordan, Timmy Carmody RIP, James O Loughlin, Mike Maguire, Willie Carmody, Willie O Sullivan, Sean Hussey, Pat Maguire. This year is also the 100th anniversary of the 1917 Tubrid Co. Championship win & their deeds are also recalled in the souvenir booklet.

Our senior hurlers have reached the North Kerry Hurling Board Senior Championship (John Joe O’SullivanMemorial Cup) final after today’s win over Crotta Gaa 1-16 to 1-2. They will meet Ballyduff in the final on a date TBC.
The game was played in Abbeydorney GAA pitch & at times the weather conditions were dangerous for playing. Full credit to both teams for coping with the rain & wind & especially to our players who might have had a late night last night.

9/9/17

The often forgotten men of hurling: the #BackroomTeam
We are very fortunate to have a very strong committed Intermediate squad back room team which was crucial to the Championship win.
Maurice Kearney as Bainisteoir & his selectors Jeremiah Clifford, Pa Joe Clifford & Tom Kelly. An unbeatable #BannaTubrid combination. The icing on the cake were the inspiring hurling coaches David Leen (also the Minor team manager/coach) & Liam O Connor (who seems to train most of our underage teams). We must not forget the Maor Camán Patrick O Riordan who is always ready to help out. We had plenty of volunteer water boys who enjoyed being part of the team set up & did their duties well.
As always the loyal supporters travelled in numbers to Killarney yesterday & many of the last winning team of 1998 were also present to congratulate the new champions. Kilgarvan Club who make a great effort to keep hurling alive in South Kerry were gracious in defeat.

9/9/17

It took 19 years to win back the Kerry GAA Co. Intermediate title after a great display today in Lewis Rd. Killarney.
Memories from 1998 where a young fleet footed John Paul Leen started wing forward. Fast forward to today & the ever young John Paul came on as a sub & laid claim to a second Co. Intermediate Championship medal.
Other connections from 1998 were team member John McCarthy, Paddy O Connor in goals in 1998 & his two sons Brendan & Pádraig on today’s panel where Brendan was awarded the Man of the Match trophy for an outstanding display. Mike Fitzgerald started corner back in 1998 & his son Kieran gave another sterling display today. Tommy O Connor was wing back in 1998 & his son Diarmuid was also on today’s panel. Gerard Hussey was full forward in 1998 & is Chairman of St. Brendan’s today.
Selectors in 1998 were Donal Leen, Con O Sullivan & Patrick O Riordan who is still closely involved with today’s team.
Also interesting to note is that referee for today’s game John Hennessy was corner forward for Ladies Walk in 1998 scoring 6 points.

8/9/17

Our U12’s were well beaten by a stronger Ballyduff Coiste Na NOg team this evening in Ardfert 4-8 to 2-1 in Kerry Coiste na nÓg Phase 2 League.

Games v Feakle/Kilanena (Clare), Inniscarra (Cork), Kilruane-McDonaghs (Tipperary), Mallow (Cork) & Éire Óg (Clare) ensured plenty of game time for all the young hurlers. They all played their best & the games were of a very high standard.
They were mentored by Liam O Connor, Eoin Lawlor, Richard Flaherty & Kenneth Lenihan & Stephen O Sullivan (both Fenit).
Emma & Sarah Lawlor were also on hand as umpires, sliotar collectors & general assistants.
It was a great day out & our thanks also to bus driver Mike Ashe, Glenside Travel.

We offer our congratulations to the U15 Munster Skills golf champions who won in Ballykisteen, Tipperary. The team included our own Fionán Egan who did the iron shots.
This qualifies the team to take part in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open Skills Challenge which will be held in Portstewart, Co. Derry on the 4th July, prior to the Irish Open. The young players will also have the chance to watch and meet the worlds best golfers as they prepare for the Dubai Duty free Irish Open. The event is supported by the “Rory Foundation.”

15/6/17

A top class performance this evening by the hurlers of Ardfert NS who toppled the reigning Cumann na mBunscol Champions Lixnaw & finished winners on a score 4-12 to 5-5.
This was certainly a game of two halves with the breeze playing havoc with scoring opportunities. Ardfert played with the breeze in the first half & went into an early lead. Even though Lixnaw tried they were unable to play against the breeze & Ardfert led at half time 2-7 to 0-1.
The second half gave Lixnaw a chance with the breeze & they rattled the net with five goals & a few points from frees, even though some of their puck outs were going wide at the opposite end of the pitch!
Ardfert kept plugging away & even though they conceded the goals they were still able to add a few scores from play with Fiachra O Connor in particular giving an exhibition of hurling.
After the last few tense minutes of play there were great scenes of jubilation when referee Paddy White blew the final whistle. Both teams were called to the stand & runners up & winners medals were presented. The four hurlers from sixth class Fiachra O Connor, Fionán Egan, Donal O Sullivan & Keith O Mahony were the nominated captains on the night & they accepted theAllianz Cumann na Mbunscol trophy. More team photographs followed & the customary procession home to Ardfert Village.
Our congratulations to all the team, their manager, teacher Mr. Billy O Connor & to his helpers Richard O Flaherty & Noel Lenihan.
We must also remember that the underage coaching these hurlers receive from their Club coaches was critical to tonight’s win.

Our U13’s began the North Kerry Hurling Board U13 A Championship with a well deserved win this evening over Ballyheigue Gaa. Both teams seemed well matched in the first half but St. Brendan’s buried a few quick goals early in the second half & Ballyheigue were unable to match the effort. A few weeks break now for GAA Feile 17 Hurling & Football & then we playBallyduff Coiste Na NOg & Lixnaw Coiste Na nOg. Liam O Connor & Declan Raggett are the U13 mentors & we thank them for their commitment.

Sally’s description of her effort (below) is;

“I would create more awareness for the need to cherish nature. The scythe is cutting down the beautiful flowers, the sweltering sun melting our world, the man cutting down the tree is also metaphorically killing himself, and the fish will need to be equipped with oxygen masks if pollution continues.”

Saturday night promises to be another memorable night for all associated with our #StrictlyComeDancing with the After Party & the launch of the DVD. The night’s activities begin at 8.30pm at McElligott’s Bar. All welcome.

22/11/16

Not much more to add to this comprehensive account of last Saturday night’s #StrictlyComeDancing from the pen of Murt Murphy who served up his usual competent Master Of Ceremonies duty.
Once again congratulations to all involved with the great night’s entertainment & a very sincere thank you to all who helped out in any way especially our stewards & props men Jeremiah Clifford, Tommy Long & Martin Woulfe, our vote sellers Siobhán Hussey, Helen Hannafin, Katie O Riordan & Orlaith Hussey & vote counters Maurice & Noreen O Driscoll. To our dancers, you have done yourself, your families & your parish proud & entertained over 500 people in the lovely venue that is Ballyroe Heights Hotel.

From the pen of Kerry’s finest Mortimor Murphy

What an amazing night and what a great group of dancers at last nights St Brendan’s Strictly Come Dancing at Ballyroe! I am sure anybody who was there will know what I am talking about – its was magnificent display of what Community means and the outpouring of community spirit and camaraderie among the dancers was almost overwhelming. It was awesome and it was fun. Not everyone can be great singers or great dancers but last night we had 24 performers who shed aside their inhibitions and went on the floor in front of over 500 people and danced their hearts out – they were all great in my eyes – they were all winners – absolutely nailed it – Hammered The Hammer even if Fintan Mac did not pull afterwards.

From the minute I entered that hall at 6pm yesterday evening – there was nothing but warmth – team work – and a few nerves as the 12 couples went through their final practice session under the watchful gaze of Cassie Leen and Ciara Powell. James Flaherty was leaving nothing to chance as he did a superb job – then what can one say about Geraldine Delaney who had to make sure all the planning of the over two months blossomed on the night – She is one of life’s genuine and dedicated human beings – Ye have a treasure – a Gem in ye’re midst out in Ardfert – look after her and appreciate here because she is one in a generation and should have at least got a bunch of flowers even if David Wallace had to steal them out of Jim O’gorman ‘s garden !!

I know she had a hard working committee behind her including Josephine O Riordan – Ger Hussey- Siobhan Hussey Jeremiah Clifford – Joanne Coffey Joanna O Driscoll and Moss J Harmon – but the glue that kept everyone together was Geraldine Delaney .
The rewards for their efforts were great though and oh what a night we had – Great stuff and huge Respect for all who put themselves up for ridicule in front of the masses.

In running order we had Ruth Wallace and Eoghan Courtney and ‘Uptown Funk’ from the Minions – awesome floor slide from Ruth – Eoghan didnt stand a chance !!

Geraldine Parker (crossed the great divide from Crotta) and David ‘3 Clubs at least Wallace’ – they were superb – though David spent a long time on the Belly slide but that was deliberate I would say!

Next we had one of my favourites, Liam the Farmer O’Sullivan and the graceful Shelia Kelly who performed ‘I am Believer’ from Shrek – Liam was fantastic in truth – but whether the cows will take to being milked by an Ogre is another matter – Shelia was class personified though dancing with an uncouth brute of a farmer she killed it – I thought the judges were very harsh – it was one of my favourites. T

Then we had Tim Hanafin and Carol Dineen with ‘Cest La Vie’ from Pulp Fiction – Wow could they move – brilliant stuff and they could go onto to star in the Xfactor – great chemistry – hope I am not breaking up any relationships here ! – By the way they were on before Liam and Shelia !

Then we had the Corkonian Danny Neenan and the lovely Siobhan McCrohan who did ‘Twist and Shout’ – they were full of energy and movement – brilliant but lost marks because the wild Cork man decided to jump up on the Judges table and nearly knocked Mary O’Donnell backwards off her chair !!

Then the first half was finished by the lovely Joanne Coffey and Donal Flaherty with ‘Annie’ – and had some kids from Cassie Leen Dancing School and they produced a magnificent display with props – it was tops but beyond the judges comprehension – though Donal was so embarrassed that he hopped on a plane to Tenerife this morning !

The second half surpassed the first half if that was possible – Stephanie Lyne and Kevin Orpen exploded onto to the dance floor and Ardfert will never be the same again as two stars were born – Kevin looking as hungry as a Butchers Dog and Stephanie with the poise and grace of a professional ballet dancer just had the audience in raptures so much so that Donaldo Mac thought it was his brother – jumped up on a table and drank two pints in three minutes as a celebration – But Kevin and Steph – absolutely nailed it and the hours of hard work paid off !

Next came the infamous Maurice McElligott and Mary Fitzgerald and their beautiful waltzing to the wonderful lively tune ” In the Arms of an angel” brought the house down – they were superb – unbelievable Jeff – and I think Maurice is taking bookings (I suggested Funeral Homes) but he said he was a Re- Publican – not an Undertaker!!

Next came Daniel Finnegan and Livia Fitzgibbon and they did the Mary Poppins – Super etc. number – its was sexy – it was brilliant and they deserved higher marks but I wasnt a judge! Livia was awesome a star of the future and Daniel is just one cool dude.

Then we treated to rare sight of Fionan MacKessy being serious with the athletic Laura Linehan and they boxed clever with the ‘Eye Of the Tiger’ – they moved well – a lot of lifting and shifting and moving and twirling but it was brilliant stuff – great to see a young man like Fionan join the older generation for the good of the Club!

One of my other favs was Linda O’Sullivan and Kieran Fitzgerald who did the ‘Lion King’ – I loved the costumes – the dancing was fantastic and yet a judge called it gym work – he wasnt at the same Gym as I was – it was mega stuff and really deserved to be higher up in the pecking order.

The final group produced sparks – the lovely Joanna O Driscoll and the electrician Chris Sheehan – absolutely jaw dropping – ‘Saturday NIght Fever’ – More than a Woman and the sad news for Chris is – she was (easy Pat – its a joke) – they nailed it good and proper and made sure the night ended in style !

It was superb stuff from all 12 couples and ALL WERE WINNERS IN MY EYES BUT WE COULD ONLY HAVE 2 WINNERS

PUBLIC VOTE: Maurice McElligott and Mary Fitzgerald
JUDGES VOTE: after a dance off between Stephanie Lyne and Kevin Orpen and Chris Sheehan and Joanne O’Driscoll – the winners were
STEPHANIE LYNE AND KEVIN ORPEN
Congrats to the official winners but everyone was a winner and it was great to see there was no bitching afterwards – take a bow all

The Judges who did a great job in general were : Mary O’Donnell- Timmy Moynihan- Mike O’Halloran and Stephen Wallace – well done folks – great job.

Best dressed Male (I was exempt) Sean O’Keeffe (Lixnaw)
Best Dressed Female: Emma Fizgerald ( Lixnaw)

There was also two Banner Prizes – Brid Courtney won as she had an awesome supporting her brother Eoghan and partner Ruth and the Senior banner winner was a girl supporting Liam O’Sullivan and Shelia Kelly.

So that is a full run down – I am sure there will be a DVD – But again well done St Brendan’s Hurling Club – Superb nights entertainment

All roads lead to Ballyroe Heights Hotel this evening for the#StrictlyComeDancing event. The 12 couples have put their hearts & souls into this event & we wish them well tonight.
The four judges Mary O Donnell Beauty, Stephen Wallace, Mike O Halloran & Timmy Moynihan will be sharpening their pencils for tonight & rumour has it that they will also be turning on the style.

We are delighted to have well known & respected judges for our#StrictlyComeDancing night at Ballyroe Heights Hotel & today we introduce our first judge.

Mary O Donnell Beauty is a well know beauty expert & a TV & radio regular as well as being an established print contributer to various publications. Mary will bring her unique expertise to the event & is looking forward to meeting all the dancers & supporters. Mary is well used to getting the best for her clients & the dancers will have her full support & encouragement.

Judge number 2 is Mike O Halloran from Ballyduff.

Very well known in hurling circles & a follower of all sports, Mike is an avid dance fan. He will know all about fox trots & sambas. He has been to a lot of#StrictlyComeDancing events in his long & varied career & will be eagerly awaiting all the new routines & dance moves & he will surely store the knowledge for some future projects of his. Mike is very camera shy & wishes to stay in the background, hence no photograph.

Our third #StrictlyComeDancing judge is Timmy Moynihan.

Timmy has the voice for radio & we are all well aware of his great match commentaries. He has entertained people at home and abroad with his very honest appraisal of team performances, so he won’t be shy in voicing his opinions of the spectacular dance routines he is going to witness on Sat. 19th Nov. in Ballyroe Heights Hotel.

10/11/16

The North Kerry Hurling Board Awards night will take place on Friday 18th November at Ballyroe Heights Hotel.
Presentations will be made to the Player of the Match for all the NK finals in 2016.
St. Brendan’s will receive awards at U13, U15 & U16 level & our U10, U11 & U12 teams also won their various Championships & blitzes at NK level.

We congratulate all our players on their great year & we acknowledge & thank all our underage mentors for their outstanding contribution to hurling in Ardfert. Without them our young people would not have the opportunity to learn & play our national game of hurling. We salute players & mentors.

12/ David Wallace & Geraldine Parker

SPONSOR: THE ABBEY TAVERN, ARDFERT

Geraldine will have her hands full with noted golfer David. While not world standard yet, David will have to bring his skills up to par to match stylish Geraldine who had had several top notch performances under her belt in previous competitions & drama. From the distant lands of Kilflynn Geraldine has plenty of experience of crowd control & will cope admirably with high spirits and low moves. We are in for a treat here.

Today is a day we will be trying to forget as our U21’s failed to get to grips with the Co. Final pace & Lixnaw GAA Club‘s dominance. A dismal day today in Abbeydorney GAA for our senior hurlers who were dismissed by the Co. Senior Champions Kilmoyley on a scoreline of 0-21 to 0-9 in the North Kerry Hurling Board Rhyno Mills Championship final double up (2015/2016).
Kilmoyley showed exactly why they are deserving champions & held St. Brendan’s scoreless in the second half.
We hope for brighter days ahead for our hurlers.
On another note we would like to extend our best wishes to Giles O Grady (Ballyduff) who was playing football yesterday with Kerins O Rahilly’s & sustained a serious leg injury. All in Kerry GAA land wish him well.

1/10/16

Kilmoyley Hurling club U16 hurlers were unable to cope with a very competent St. Brendan’s side today in sunny Ardfert in the North Kerry Hurling Board U16 Championship semi final.
St. Brendan’s led at half time 1-6 to 0-3 & eventually went on to deliver a 3-13 score to Kilmoyley’s 1-3. St. Brendan’s will now play Causeway in the final on a date & venue TBC.
Mentors today were our senior hurlers Kieran Fitzgerald & Daniel Finnegan who are putting in a lot of time & effort with the U16 team & the Club is very grateful to them.

29/9/16

It could be the Lovely Legs competition but it’s not! It’s the beginning of the Strictly Come Dancing Fundraiser for St. Brendan’s Hurling Club going ahead on Saturday 19th November at Ballyroe Heights Hotel.
The dancers have been chosen & the couples will be unveiled to the public on a launch date next month.
12 couples will dance on the night & are already in serious rehearsals! There are also rumours of secret training, especially in the West Commons direction! All will be revealed in due course & a limited number of tickets will also be on sale shortly.
A fun night to look forward to in November.

29/9/16

Our U15’s claimed silverware this evening under lights in a packedAbbeydorney GAA where they took on Ballyduff in the final of the North Kerry Hurling Board Rhyno Mills U15 A Final.
The captain Joseph Flaherty led his team to a 3-11 to 3-5 win having trailed at the half time interval by 3 points 1-6 to 3-3. He was presented with the ‘Johnny Hussey Memorial Shield’ by Pat Dineen of the NKHB.
It took a very polished performance to claim this win & the large crowd of Ardfert supporters made their presence felt & urged the team on.
The Player of the Match was Pádraig O Sullivan who gave an exhibition of hurling at wing back over the hour. He will receive his award later this year from the North Kerry Hurling Board at their annual awards night.

Our U10 hurlers had a great day today at the North Kerry Hurling BoardRhyno Mills blitz held in Abbeydorney GAA.
They defeated teams from Ballyduff, Kilmoyley Hurling club, Tralee Parnell’s & Lixnaw GAA Club.
They all enjoyed their day’s hurling & credit to their mentors Eoin Lawlor, Richard O Flaherty & Stephen O Sullivan.
Well done also to our minor hurler Micheál O Sullivan who was one of the referees for today’s blitz.

1/7/16

Our U13 hurlers gave a very determined & spirited performance this evening in Kilmoyley Hurling club where they took on a brave Ballyheigue side. Ballyheigue defeated Ballyduff on Wednesday evening having already accounted for St. Brendan’s in an earlier round of this North Kerry Hurling Board Rhyno Mills Championship.
Despite the wind, cold, rain & a shower of hailstones before the match ended both teams never gave up & gave a great display. Ballyheigue seemed to benefit more from the breeze in the first half & led at half time by four points 3-1 to 1-3. St. Brendan’s came out all guns blazing in the second half & buried a few early goals & never lost their way. Strong defensive play by St. Brendan’s kept Ballyheigue at bay & held them to just the one point in the second half while St. Brendan’s clocked up 5-3. It was a great team performance & a spectacular individual display from Man of the Match St. Brendan’s Earnán Ferris.
Pat Dineen of the North Kerry Hurling Board presented the Jack / Michael Galvin Memorial Trophy to the winning captain Sean Brosnan.
Team: Christopher Lawlor, John Davis, Lorcan Ryan, Odhran Pierce, Gary O Riordan, Gavin Raggett, Donal O Sullivan, Sean Brosnan (Captain), Ronan Casey Pierce, Adam Doyle, Earnán Ferris, Christopher Nolan, Michael Kearney, Keith O Mahony, Fionán Egan.
Sub played Odhran Ferris.
Injured & absent: Darragh O Sullivan, Andrew Wallace, Fiachra O Connor, Liam Og O Connor & Adam McDonagh.
Mentors tonight were Sean Ryan & Martin Daly & unavoidably absent were Liam O Connor & Declan Raggett who will be delighted with the players attitude & work rate.
Congratulations to all the team & mentors & a sincere thank you to the supporters who braved the elements & to Kilmoyley Club for the use of the field for the game etc.

A message from John Tweek Griffin on behalf of the Kerry hurlers team holiday fundraising group.

A Chara,

My name is John Griffin (Tweek). I was captain of the Kerry Senior Hurlers in 2015 in what was a very successful year winning the league, getting promoted to Div.1 and winning the Christy Ring Cup.
With a team holiday in November the squad are holding a major fundraiser next Saturday night.
See below.

The Kerry Senior Hurlers are holding their major fundraiser this Saturday night 17th October in a Marquee in McHales Stretford End Bar in Causeway.

The hurlers and distinguished guests will take to the dancefloor to raise further funds for their team holiday. They are having a ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ Night in what promises to be a greats nights entertainment.

See players Shane Nolan, Brian Murphy, Brendan O Leary and Mikey Boyle dance, and expect plenty lifts and energy on the dancefloor! Doors open at 7pm sharp with the show beginning at 8pm.

I am asking for the support of the hurling clubs in the coming week to promote it within ye’re own clubs. and publicise it. We would also ask that people and Clubs come out and support the hurlers for their major fundraiser.

Tickets are €20 and are available from players and some local outlets. If you haven’t been to one of these dancing nights before, it is a great nights entertainment and a good laugh.

If you have any queries you can contact me on 0876230605 or some of the hurlers within ye’re own clubs.

Thanks for your time
John Griffin.

Plenty of hurling in Kerry GAA next weekend with the Co. Minor Championship semi final St. Brendan’s v South Kerry on Saturday 10th at 1pm in Lewis Road, Killarney & the North Kerry Hurling Board senior championship game Abbeydorney GAA v St. Brendan’s at 2pm on Monday 26th in Abbeydorney.
Best of luck to both teams & management squads.

4/10/15

A badly needed win today for our U21 hurlers who defeated Lixnaw GAA Club by one point 2-11 to 1-13 after a hectic last 10 minutes. Both teams served up a good game with the lead switching between them & it looked like a comfortable win for St. Brendan’s with 15 minutes to go but Lixnaw never gave up & got the lead down to one point at the final whistle. The last 10 minutes were a tough battle & we are delighted to progress another step in the Kerry GAA Co. U21 Championship. Well done to all the players today & to the management team of Liam O Connor, Phil Stack, Liam Hussey & newcomer to U21 management Darren Dineen.
A special word of thanks also to our own David Fitzgerald who was our sports injury therapist today & did great work. Great support today also helped to get the team over the line.

27/9/15

The St. Brendan’s Co. Hurling Championship team of 1990 were honoured last night at a dinner at Kate Browne’s which was attended by former Co. Board Chairman & former GAA President Sean Kelly & current Co. Board Chairman Patrick O Sullivan. Both paid tribute to the feats of 1990 & all the hurlers of the time were present to enjoy the dinner & meeting up with former team mates. Former Kerry GAA footballer & trainer of the hurlers in 1990 John O Keeffe also attended & spoke of his pride in working with the hurlers.
The hurlers were also introduced to the crowd at today’s Co. Final inAbbeydorney GAA. Congratulations to the former champions.

21/8/15

Our minor hurlers progressed to the next round of the Kerry GAA Keane’s SuperValu Minor Championship after a very entertaining game this evening in Ardfert v Crotta.
Crotta started well & went into an early lead due to some easily conceded frees. Both teams gave a great effort with plenty of hard tackles. The large crowd at the game got to see plenty of great hurling from two very committed teams. Crotta led by 6 points at half time 1-7 to 0-4 & seemed on course for victory, but our minors had other plans. Eric Leen with some accurate free taking & Pádraig O Mahony who connected with a high ball & clipped it into the Crotta net gave a new energy to St. Brendan’s.
That first Ardfert goal changed the game & it was now Crotta who were on the backfoot. Strong displays from our backs led by Iarla Courtney & Shane O Mahony eased the pressure & Fionán Mackessy & Adrian Nolan kept the ball on the move. Further points from both teams, a second Pádraig O Mahony goal & a late consolation goal for Crotta still left St. Brendan’s with a win. A great game & both teams gave such an effort but it is St. Brendan’s who progress much to the great disappointment of a gallant Crotta side.

Final score St. Brendan’s 1-13 Crotta 1-12.

Our team tonight:
Shane McCrohan.
Shane O’Mahony.
Eoghain Kearney
James Lawlor
Gearóid Savage.

Dean Sinnott
Eric Leen. 0-6
Pádraig O’Connor(capt). 0-1

Pádraig O’Mahony. 2-3
Jack McCarthy. 0-1

Subs tonight: Diarmuid O’Connor.
Devin Costello.
Noel Lenihan.

We would like to wish a speedy recovery to Aaron Thompson & Mícheál O Sullivan.

What a great day for Kerry hurling & an even better day for our own John Egan who scored the winning point in a thrilling promotion/relegation battle with Antrim in Parnell Park, Dublin.

Down 0-11 to 0-3 at half time it took great strength of character for this bunch of Kerry hurlers led by Tweek Griffin to haul themselves back to draw level & to eventually win out on a score 2-16 to 1-18.

Great celebrations ensued on the pitch,  the sun replaced the earlier heavy rain and supporters, players, management & media all joined in the joyous scenes.

The night was a great success & several members of St. Brendan’s Hurling Club gave lovely performances including our boy singers, boys in the comedy sketches, a Madonna performance from Lisa O Halloran, a Bonnie Tyler tribute from Fiona Dillon, the guitar/singing Skinner brothers Seamus & Kevin & Master of Ceremonies Tony O Halloran who gave a sterling performance with Toireasa Ferris & to top it all off one of the hamper prizes was won by Padraig O Mahony. Well done to everybody involved with the event.

The concert was preceeded by the Blessing of the Crib & the Lighting of the tree & Grainne Kavanagh & Ann Fitzgerald spearheaded the effort again this year to get the night organised assisted by Martin Woulfe, Ardfert Village Development Association & Ardfert Community Council Ltd.

The ‘Atlantic Oils’ Co. U21 hurling championship cup is gone to Causeway after they defeated St. Brendan’s 0-18 to 0-9.  Causeway led from the beginning and grew in strength as the game progressed.
Half time score Causeway 0-11 St. Brendan’s 0-3.
Causeway still managed to out score St. Brendan’s in the second half even though they had to play into a stiff breeze.  Congratulations to Causeway & we send our best wishes to our own Fionan Horgan & Eoghan Courtney who had to retire injured from the game.

St. Brendan’s Hurling Club held it’s AGM on Friday 12th Dec. 2014.  Senior & Juvenile Secretarys reports were read & an appeal was made for more help with coaching and mentoring juvenile teams.

It was also stressed that coaches will have to have at least a foundation level coaching course completed & everybody coaching teams will have to be Garda vetted.

Fundraising is still a major issue & it will have to be done again in 2015, so the more help available the better for everybody.

Tributes were paid to all who help out in any way with the Club whether with coaching, fundraising, catering or field work. All help is greatly appreciated.

All the Club Officers were unopposed & we look forward to a new year with confidence.
